HISTORY OF GOGEBIC MICHIGAN

 

A station on the Milwaukee, Lake Shore & Western Railway, between Watersmeet and Marenisco. This place derives its notoriety as being the station from which tourists and summer resorters reach the far renowned and beautiful Lake Gogebic

 

The lake is situated about five miles north of the station, and is probably one of the most beautiful sheets of water in the Northwest. It is about thirteen miles long and eight miles broad. The Lake Shore Company has erected at the southern extremity of the take a large hotel, which is elegantly furnished with all the modern improvements, from the veranda of which a beautiful view of the lake can be had. They have also built a row of small cottages for the use of the people who resort to this beautiful spot for their summer rest and recreation. The hotel at present is conducted by R. G. Haviland, of Chicago, and during the summer months is thronged by resorters who come there to fish in the beautiful waters of the lake and streams that lead into it, and to hunt in the surrounding forests.
